I remember the first time I heard someone personify books. He said, “They’re like friends sitting there on our shelves waiting to talk to us about the most important things in life.” (Any idea who might have said that?)
Well, if that’s true, then I feel like Kevin DeYoung is a friend. (Perhaps I can just say Kevin, since after all we’re friends.) On some of the most challenging questions that I have wrestled with, both personally and in pastoral ministry, I’ve found DeYoung to be a very helpful friend. We’ve “talked” for hours about the death and resurrection of Jesus and its implications for life, the difficulties of sorting out what college major to choose and how to go about making decisions as a Christian, and the beauty of diversity as experienced in the local church community.
And his preaching is every bit as engaging and penetrating as is his writing. I would venture to guess that DeYoung’s main session and breakout session were some of the most frequently-cited conference highlights of our entire time in Baltimore ’09.
It’s a joy to know he’ll be back next year.
